THE CHIMES OF ALYAFALEYN
Alya - region; faleyn - harmony

The world exists via sound and vibration in the form of hollow golden spheres that float across the skies each spring. At puberty its peoples develop the ability to draw them with their minds alone. The really gifted gather many and tune them to harmonies (faleyn) and through them regulate the seasons, the crops, and cure disease. In a remote village a child is born under remarkable conditions. The mother is set to die, the baby to be stillborn. Silwender, High Zjarn (healer) is passing and stops to help. A small boy - Tamborel - and the baby - Caidrun - are deeply affected by the healing harmonies. Before she is even two she can snag the heynim at lethal speed. This she does and Tamborel is badly hurt shielding her from them. As a result, she is forced to grow up deprived of the chiming. . .

She becomes angry, resentful and tone deaf. At length she quits the village and strikes out leaving a string of disasters behind her. Tamborel sets out to find her and thereby hangs the rest of the tale.
